“Haideboden”
Haideboden (dear lady of the Hayd”, 1482) is the description of the stretch of land round the pilgrimage centre of Frauenkirchen (possessio zenmaria 1342).
It is applied to a not very clearly defined area of land in the municipality of Frauenkirchen, between Seewinkel to the west, Parndorfer Platte to the north, and Hansag to the south.
The characteristics of the land are light, sandy, black soil with gravel as subsoil (Danube gravel). On the gently rising land the poor, meagre, gravel comes to the surface, and demonstrates exceptionally good conditions for vine cultivation. The grapes grow slowly, reflecting the limited water availability. They ripen well, and in winter the flow of cold air protects them from frost damage.
Umathum vineyard has used the trademark protected designation “Haideboden” since 1991 for its Red wine Cuvée, and has, over the years, built up the image of “Haideboden origin”.
“Umathum Haideboden” is today a brand image, representing high value red wines from the Burgenland.
In the meantime the striking name “Haideboden” has been used by many vintners in the region for wines of the most diverse styles.
In future it would be important to define the boundaries of the area, and also find a definition of the wine style, to give consumers a clear message, and thus strengthen the brand “Haideboden”.
Suitability of grape varieties for the Haideboden area:
Zweigelt for the iron-rich, not too chalky gravel soils, which are not too dry.
Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc on the extremely harsh, gravel sites.
Blaufränkisch for the locations where clay occurs in the subsoil.
Sankt Laurent for the chalk-rich, gravel soils, with good ventilation.
