Austria Highlights
Wine Spectator Jan/Feb 2008
The articlulate and friendly Josef Umathum oversees one of Austria’s best red wine estates. Umathum, located in the northern Burgenland, is going biodynamic and has recently renovated a vineyard site dating to the 13th century. This is the Joiser Kirschgarten, and Umathum is making a top-flight Blaufränkisch from it-rich, ripe and
full of dark red cherry and spice flavors. Umathum is also planting the Hungarian white variety Furmint at the site; it will be interesting to see what the future holds for this project.
